Liberals on ‘The View’ mock Melania Trump. Then Melania’s spokeswoman punches back.
The spokeswoman for first lady Melania Trump lashed out at ABC’s “The View” on Friday after the show’s liberal women seemingly mocked the first lady’s statement responding to the anonymous New York Times op-ed bashing President Donald Trump.
What did the women say?
Co-host Sunny Hostin said she was “struck” by Melania’s statement before going on to read the statement in a mocking tone. She was prepared to read it while mimicking Melania’s accent.
Hostin emphasized the first lady’s line that “words are important” and “accusations can lead to severe consequences.”
“As far as I recall…I recall that Melania was a birther,” Hostin said. “Weren’t those words very important and accusation very important?”
Co-host Joy Behar added that Melania’s statement sounded like one her predecessor, Michelle Obama, would have written.
Behar also brought attention to the jacket Melania wore when visiting detained immigrant children at the border this summer. During that trip, Melania controversially wore a jacket with the words “I really don’t care, do you?” inscribed on the back.
“How about that?” Hostin said. “How about that?”
What did Melania’s spokeswoman say?
Raw Story, the left-leaning news outlet that brought attention to the segment, described the segment with the headline: “The View destroys Melania for attacking anonymous NYT op-ed — after helping Trump push birther lies.”
But according to Stephanie Grisham, Melania’s press secretary and communications director, Hostin and Behar didn’t “destroy” the first lady. Rather, they were “disrespectful & hypocritical.”
