With a strong wind and firm conditions, Shinnecock Hills presented a massive test for the best players in the world at the U.S. Open on Thursday.

Despite the scoring average being over 76, one player who was able to thrive was Henrik Stenson, who fired a 1-over 71 to sit just two shots off the lead.

The Swedish star, known as one of the funnier players on Tour, admitted it was a tough test of golf, but chose to take a positive approach.

"It doesn't get much harder than this," Stenson said, as per Ryan Lavner of Golf Channel. "You're going to laugh, you're going to cry, and I guess we chose to laugh today, which is obviously the better option."

Perhaps some of the top players would be wise to adopt Stenson's mindset, as Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, Tiger Woods, Jason Day, Jon Rahm, and Rory McIlroy all failed to break 77 in Round 1.
