YouTube Music rumored to launch on Tuesday along with rebranded YouTube Premium
It has been rumored for quite some time that YouTube is working on launching a subscription music service, with many expecting that service to be named YouTube Remix.
Recode is reporting on Wednesday that the new service is actually going to be called YouTube Music (apparently YouTube likes this branding), and it will have a soft launch on Tuesday, May 22. There will be a trial period, according to the report, and after that the new subscription music service will cost $10 per month, putting it right in line with the major competitors, like Spotify and Apple Music.
That service will offer the stock streaming experience, with rumors pointing to offline music playback support, customized playlists based on a user’s listening history, and more. There will be other “bells and whistles”, but there’s no word on what those might be just yet.
It’s also suggested YouTube’s new music streaming option would mean the end of Google Play Music, so we may be saying goodbye to that service next week.
But that’s not all. The YouTube team is planning a not insignificant change to YouTube Red, the subscription service that not only removes ads from YouTube but also allows access to YouTube original content, including the popular Cobra Kai.
According to the report, YouTube is going to rebrand Red as YouTube Premium, and it will cost $12 per month from next week on. That’s a $2 per month increase.
Nothing is official just yet, but if the launch window of next week is the real deal, we should be hearing more from Google very soon.

UPDATE: It’s been confirmed that YouTube Music Premium will cost $9.99 per month and include ad-free music, including music videos, as well as support for playing music in the background and downloading music. YouTube Premium will cost $11.99 per month and include the same features as YouTube Music Premium as well as ad-free videos, videos that play in the background, offline videos, and access to YouTube Originals.
