A community group is praising an agreement approved by Toronto city council that mandates local benefits like child care from the Woodbine casino expansion.

According to the Toronto Community Benefits Network, the agreement provides for an investment of $5 million to develop child care for the workers and the community, a hard target that 40 per cent of new hires come from the local community and equity-seeking groups, and that half the jobs be full-time.

This community benefits agreement breaks new ground and shows that it is possible to ensure that big developments support the local community with good jobs,” Rosemarie Powell, the network’s executive director, said in a statement Thursday.

Toronto Coun. Mike Ford said expanded gambling at Woodbine Racetrack will serve as a catalyst for investment and redevelopment in Etobicoke’s north end.

Council’s approval of the deal means Woodbine Racetrack will grow into a full casino with expanded gambling and entertainment options.
