After surviving a mass shooting at their school on Wednesday, February 14th, students of Parkland, Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School called for change at a CNN-hosted town hall meeting last night, February 21st. Students sat across from Washington lawmakers and the National Rifle Association’s (NRA) spokeswoman, Dana Loesch. And Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel literally called B.S. after Loesch claimed to be on the students’ side.

High school senior Emma Gonzalez, who has become a passionate and vocal advocate for tighter guns laws since 17 of her peers and teachers were gunned down last week, asked Loesch if she believed it should be harder for people to obtain semi-automatic weapons and bump stocks. Loesch referred to shooter Nikolas Cruz as an “insane monster” and stated that the NRA does not support the idea that “crazy” people should be able to have access to a firearm.

“I understand you’re standing up for the NRA and I understand that’s what you’re supposed to do,” Sheriff Israel responded to Loesch. “But you just told this group of people that you are standing up for them. You’re not standing up for them until you say I want less weapons.”

Sheriff Israel continued,

“We do need to have some gun control reform. 18-year-olds should never have a rifle…They’re not adults yet. They’re in high school. Bump stocks should be illegal. They should be outlawed forever. Automatic rifles should be outlawed forever. And anybody who says different, I don’t know about other people, but Emma [Gonzalez] and I, we’re calling B.S. on that.”

Israel was specifically referring to Gonzalez’s empowering speech at an anti-gun rally in Fort Lauderdale on February 17th. Through her tears, she called B.S. on the politicians who have accepted donations from the NRA and refuse to take action to prevent further mass shootings.

Before the town hall began, Sheriff Israel addressed the enraged and driven students from his county. “My generation, we did not get it done,” he told them. “You will get it done.”

We stand with the students of Parkland, and we’ll continue to call B.S. until change happens.
