Ministry of Defence has said inclusion of Trident in its budget harms its ability to pay for conventional military services

The government is considering shifting the cost of the Trident nuclear deterrent from the Ministry of Defence budget, the national security adviser Mark Sedwill has disclosed.

This would reverse a policy introduced by George Osborne as chancellor in 2010. Until that point, the cost of the nuclear deterrent had traditionally been met outside the defence budget.
