UTEP head coach Sean Kugler announced his resignation Sunday after accumulating five straight losses to begin the season.

"We really appreciate the dedication and hard work that coach Kugler has brought to this program, and we are proud of the accomplishments during his tenure as head coach," athletic director Bob Stull said in a statement. "After a long discussion, we have agreed that it is best for him and the program that he step down."

The move makes UTEP the first FBS school to have a vacancy at head coach. Kugler went 18-36 over four-plus seasons at the helm. His banner year came in 2014, when he guided the Miners to a 7-6 record, and a bowl game.

The Miners plan to unveil a new head coach Monday.

UTEP has recorded only one winning season since 2005.
