Mackenzie Hughes shot his best round since the opening round of the RSM Classic that he won last November, with a 5-under-par round of 65.
Hughes birdied the par-3 4th, the par-4 6th and the par-5 9th on his opening nine holes to make the turn in 32.
The two-time Canadian Amateur champion began the back nine with with birdies on No. 10 and No. 12, but added two bogeys at the 11th and 13th holes. After that back-and-forth four hole stretch, it was back to stellar golf with three pars and two birdies to finish to wrap up his round.
"I think confidence is a nice thing," said Hughes after his round.
For a player who hasn't seen any of the courses he's playing, Hughes says he makes sure he uses his time on the course Monday through Wednesday wisely.
"I make sure I am thorough with my practice rounds."

When asked about his last two months since his first career win, a victory that has allowed him into some big tournaments like the Masters in April, Hughes said, "It's been an awesome ride."
