BART’s ambassadors program, announced last month as a six-month trial run, kicked off Monday at the Lake Merritt station in Oakland.

The program was conceived in response to riders’ concerns about safety on the transit system. The uniformed ambassadors will not make arrests or hand out citations, but they will be on hand to report hazards that need cleaning, such as blood, urine and other fluids on trains; they also have been trained in de-escalating confrontations.

From 2 to 7 p.m. each day, two-person teams of ambassadors will ride trains in the suburbs, with some riding back and forth from Walnut Creek to Pittsburg/Bay Point and others from the Coliseum station to Union City.

Then, from 7 p.m. until the system winds down at midnight each day, the teams will switch to the core of the BART system in downtown San Francisco and Oakland, circulating between the Civic Center and 12th Street stations.
