Chef JJ Whips up Gucci Greens and Thanksgiving Leftovers on ‘The Dropcast’
On this week’s episode of The Dropcast, hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas catch up with Chef JJ Johnson to hear about what he’s got cooking. The James Beard Award-winning chef specializes in his signature pan-African cuisine, which he brought into popularity during his residency at New York’s Chefs Club. While Chef JJ is busy feeding the culture, he also believes in the importance of integrating his food with the community.
The quick hits bring some appetizers to the table with Undercover’s Nike Air Max 720 and React Boot, both of which are dropping this week (2:50). The main course presents Dior’s B24 and Louis Vuitton’s Rivoli sneakers, with the latter looking a bit reminiscent of a dish the French fashion house has served in the past (5:23). The cast decides to take a pass on dessert — the Prada x adidas Superstars — which they hope is just a teaser for what the two brands have in store for the future (9:07).
This week’s biggest headlines are lined up, starting with Sherbinskis, The Dropcast alumni and the by CHLOE. of the cannabis market, which recently opened the doors for its flagship North American dispensary on Los Angeles’ Fairfax Avenue (13:47). Then, the hosts fire the alarm for the cop of the week: LVMH’s purchase of Tiffany & Co. for a record-breaking $16.2 billion (15:29). Last but not least, Drake’ dad, Dennis Graham, is in talks to land his own reality dating show with multiple networks that are interested in securing the series (17:37). Things start to get questionable with Drake on board as the executive producer.
Chef JJ talks cooking some off-menu items for Dapper Dan’s dinner, who’s now vegan and a fan of JJ’s restaurant up in Harlem — get ready for some Gucci Greens (19:57). JJ discusses Fieldtrip, where rice is culture, and what the holidays are like for him (21:40). He dishes out tips for getting that moist turkey ready in time for next Thanksgiving, and a quick recipe for turkey leftovers just in time for this year (23:05).
This episode’s Question of the Week (QOTW) asked, “What’s your favorite struggle meal?” and had Dropcast listeners calling in with tasteful inspirations while JJ shares his related food stories an quick-and-easy bodega grabs (25:22).
Speaking of consumerism and giving thanks during the holidays, the episode wraps up with “What’d You Cop?” (33:26). Chef JJ was gifted a pair of Converse Off-Whites, and talks about changing the shoe game for chefs in the kitchen.
As always, our next QOTW will be up on Highsnobiety’s Instagram. Leave us a voicemail on The Dropcast hotline at 833-HIGHSNOB (833-444-4766) for a chance to be featured in a future episode.
