An extremely rare copy of the 1939 Marvel Comics No. 1 has sold at auction for a record $1,260,000. The title is regarded by the auction house to represent “the Big Bang of the Marvel Comics Superhero Universe.”

This particular copy was given a 9.4 rating out of 10 by and is reported to be the highest-rated copy of the issue in existence. Only two others have been rated 9.0 or above, according to Newsarama.

The sale has broken a number of records, including the most expensive Marvel comic ever sold at public auction, as well as an auction house record. “This is a historic copy of a historic comic book,” said Ed Jaster, Senior Vice President at Heritage Auctions. “Without question, this is the granddaddy of all Marvel Comics, without which we would not have the characters and stories we enjoy in today’s comics and feature films.”
