Moment Palestinian man is shot in the back ‘for fun’ as he walks away with hands up
This is the moment a Palestinian man is shot in the back by an Israeli police officer, as he walks away with his hands in the air.
Leaked footage of the incident, which took place a year and half ago, shows the man holding his hands in the air and walking away after being told to do so by Israeli police.
Israeli border officers can be heard shouting ‘get out of here!’ in Arabic.
Nearly 20 seconds after he walks away, the man is shot in the back from a distance.
He screams with pain as he collapses on the floor, near what is believed to be the al-Zaim checkpoint outside Jerusalem.
Israel’s Channel 13 says the man was shot with a sponge tipped bullet.
The country’s Haaretz paper later reported that although he was not critically hurt in the shooting, the man was ‘seriously wounded’.
At a hearing at the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court last year, Judge Elad Persky said the suspect apparently shot the Palestinian ‘as a dubious form of entertainment’, according to Haaretz.
Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the justice department did open an investigation into the incident as soon as it became aware of it.
He said: ‘As soon as the incident became known, the female border police officer was removed from duty.
‘The other border policemen who were there were also removed and some of them were transferred from their positions.’
Although a criminal investigation into the shooting had been completed last year, an expected date for a decision has not been revealed.
As the video emerged, the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) slammed Israel over the incident, MailOnline reported.
They also urged the UN to act to defend human rights in the territory.
A spokesperson for the PLO said: ‘The video shows the extent of blind hatred and Zionist racism.’
Israeli human rights group B’Tselem said the incident was ‘an unexceptional event’ and blamed a culture of impunity from security services.
B’Tselem spokesman Amit Gilutz said: ‘This exceptional documentation shows what, sadly, is an unexceptional event: Israeli security forces hurting a Palestinian for absolutely no reason.
‘Such instances are the direct result of the culture of impunity fostered by Israel, which is crucial to the perpetuation of its military control over the Palestinians.’
