Nike has pulled its planned Independence Day-themed Air Max 1 sneakers after former NFL player Colin Kaepernick highlighted design elements offensive to many, CNBC reports. The silhouette was originally slated to drop on July 4.
The shoe features an early, 13-star American flag known as the “Betsy Ross flag,” which was flown during the American Revolution. A Wall Street Journal report states that Kaepernick contacted Nike officials to express his displeasure at the use of a flag used during the time of slavery.
In a statement obtained by CNBC, Nike said, “Nike has chosen not to release the Air Max 1 Quick Strike Fourth of July as it featured an old version of the American flag.” Retailers that were gearing up to launch the shoe on Thursday have been asked to return their stock.
