Aziz Ansari Announces New Netflix Special ‘Right Now’ Directed by Spike Jonze
Aziz Ansari is returning to stand up in a new Netflix special called Aziz Ansari: Right Now. Directed by Spike Jonze, this serves as the first stand up special by the comedian since he was accused of sexual assault in 2018.
The allegation came from an article on Babe.net which gave the account of a woman who went on a date with Ansari, but felt pressured into sexual activity despite her verbal and physical cues of discomfort. The Master of None star addressed the incident stating, “It was true that everything did seem okay to me, so when I heard that it was not the case for her, I was surprised and concerned.”
Since, the comedian has taken a long break from television, film, and the spotlight. This past spring, he finally emerged for an intimate show at New York’s Comedy Cellar followed by a tour. With about 200 in attendance at the New York show, Ansari addressed the allegations once more, according to Variety, revealing, “There were times I felt really upset and humiliated and embarrassed, and ultimately I just felt terrible this person felt this way. But you know, after a year, how I feel about it is, I hope it was a step forward. It made me think about a lot, and I hope I’ve become a better person.”
We expect he’ll dive deeper into the controversial incident in his upcoming Right Now special, which will premiere on Netflix on July 9. Watch the trailer above.
