Vans, not a brand typically associated with the hustle and bustle of runway shows, has been present at Paris Fashion Week Men’s to present its SS20 footwear collection, and we were on the scene to see what the California skate titan has up its sleeve for next year.
Most noteworthy were collaborations with PORTER, including a range of accessories such as bags and wallets, and Fergus “Fergadelic” Purcell, designer of Palace’s Tri-Ferg logo. (Although there were no physical samples to shoot from the latter collection.)
Speaking about the PORTER collab, Vans spokesperson Jake Mednik explains that the line features Vans’ VLT technology, a drop-in sock liner designed for comfort. “PORTER is built on the VLT, built for that comfort,” he says. “[The colorways] tie back to the color palette that [PORTER plays] heavily into, with the orange and the greens, as well as black, white.”
Other eye-catching designs included a paisley bandana-style print, which has been a staple in Vans collections over the years, and palm tree graphic-clad soles. Vans’ signature checkerboard pattern was also on show, as was a mix of heritage models and newer efforts such as the UltraRange, which came out in 2017.
Mednik also expanded on the new OGE line, saying, “The new OGE build will launch in spring 2020. It’s actually not the new OG. It’s the most original build from our brand, built in the US back in the ’60s. You’ll notice some imperfect beauty throughout the design elements.
“The sidewall is kind of tapered in toward the bottom, and the foxing tape comes up higher over the upper, giving it a pointier toe and a little cleaner shape. And then the sidewall rubber, as well as the sole, has got a little bit of a stickier component to it, which was again a nod to the original build.”
