The final season of Game of Thrones is just around the corner, with the premiere landing on April 14. To celebrate, HBO has teamed up with adidas on a set of Game of Thrones-themed Ultraboost sneakers, which are available from today.
Comprising six colorways, each Ultraboost represents a different group or creature in the show, with different materials and design details nodding to the White Walkers, the Night’s Watch, the Starks, the Targaryens, the Lannisters, and Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons.
Following its impact on the sneaker world after catalyzing a major industry shift in cushioning technology, the Ultraboost was the subject of high-profile collaborations from 2015 to 2017. Now, the silhouette more often than not comes as a general release, making the Game of Thrones collaboration the highest-profile Ultraboost release in some time.
Game of Thrones heads might know their Tyrells from their Tullys, but perhaps not the ins and outs of sneaker culture. We wanted to know how they’ve received news of the collab, so we tapped five hardcore fans to get their views on the drop, whether they’ll be copping, and who they think will be sitting on the Iron Throne come the end of season eight.
Daniel Issroff (Berlin, Germany): When I first heard about it, I was pretty suspicious because it didn’t seem like a natural fit.
Melissa Dickson (Springfield, IL, USA): When I found out, I was searching the internet to get pictures of each of the houses and themes they were doing. I have an entire third bedroom in my house that my fiancé and I have turned into what we call the Game of Thrones room. I collect anything and everything Game of Thrones. So I knew I was going to get these shoes, too.
Brian H. (Greensboro, NC, USA): Not gonna lie, I was incredibly pumped when I saw the first images of the collab. I believe they were posted on Facebook and I immediately reposted them. As a huge fan of the show and adidas, to me, this is a match made in heaven.
Lilly Ortiz (Los Angeles, CA, USA): My first reaction was pumped! I don’t see Game of Thrones merch very often, especially not good quality merch.
Daniel: I love footwear, but I wouldn’t call myself a sneakerhead overall, no.
Melissa: I definitely wouldn’t call myself a sneakerhead. The closest I get would be the black and white Converse I wear to work.
Brian: I love a good sneaker, but I couldn’t tell you what is what by just looking at a sneaker.
Lilly: I would for sure call myself a sneakerhead. I like classic styles especially.
Daniel: I don’t mind the profile, but they’re so everywhere that I couldn’t really be caught wearing them.
Melissa: Some of the guys at work have the Ultraboost and I think they look nice. I’ve heard that they’re super-comfortable, but I don’t personally own any.
Lucy (Canada): I don’t really care about sneakers, nor have I ever tried Ultraboost. I’m mostly interested in the sneakers because of the show.
Brian: I love the Ultraboost! It’s a great sneaker and ridiculously comfortable as well. Real smooth look and just an all-around great sneaker.
Daniel: As I said, I was suspicious at first, but when I saw your full explainer article I was really impressed. The color palette on Game of Thrones has always been exquisite and adidas really managed to capture that with the different colorways. It’s probably still not enough to make me buy Ultraboosts, but I’m now on the fence.
Melissa: I love the collaboration. Like I said, I will literally buy anything Game of Thrones. I’m getting the Lannister, Targaryen, Fire and Blood, Nights Watch, and White Walker ones for sure.
Lucy: I don’t know if the shoes will be available in my country, so I haven’t really considered purchasing them or not.
Brian: I think the sneakers aren’t too busy and represent each of the houses in the show very well. The Night’s Watch is so cool looking, as well as the White Walker ones. As a huge fan of the brand and the TV show, it’s a perfect fit and match for me.
Lilly: I love the collab mostly because I love shoes and I love Game of Thrones. It’s also pretty unexpected to see. I’d buy, definitely, and wear them on April 14 for the first episode of season eight.
Daniel: There’s not too much not to like, to be honest. They did a very nice job.
Brian: I wish they could’ve included a Free Folk or Wildling one. Or maybe even a House Mormont Ultraboost.
Lilly: I can’t really say what I don’t like about the sneaker without physically holding it or trying it on. Aesthetically, I think they’re pretty damn perfect.
