Spieth followed his opening-round 76 with a decent 69 on Friday but fell two shots shy of the cut. After his round, he said his "putting's back, it's very close to being top of the world again," according to the PGA Tour's Mike McAllister. Spieth gained five strokes putting in Round 2 but lost over six shots tee to green for the week.
Mickelson hinted at skipping The Players because of course setup, perhaps a reason why he carded back-to-back rounds of 74. He also missed the cut at last week's Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Xander Schauffele also won't be playing on the weekend after finishing as the runner-up at The Players last season. The eighth-ranked player in the world shot 70-74 to miss the cut by one.
