Designer: Kiko Kostadinov
Key Pieces: Kiko Kostadinov’s sophomore womenswear collection marks the Fannings’ first collaborations with Asics. This goes for both footwear and performance wear bodysuits. Additionally, the modern Victoriana lace-up boots are a standout item from the collection, made in collaboration with Camper.
Editor’s Notes: Having recently graduated from Central Saint Martins, Melbourne-born sisters Laura and Deanna Fanning deliver a striking SS19 collection for Kiko Kostadinov. It is at once hyper-futuristic and luxurious. Described as a synergistic counterpart to the menswear line, the line boasts sharper lines, bolder colors, and more exaggerated silhouettes.
The siblings conceived of many of the garments with a sister in mind, with both complementary and antithetical textiles and aesthetics at play in one ensemble. Hence many of the materials are mixed and mismatched, striking juxtapositions of opulence and utility. Nylons, lycra and crunchy synthetics are spliced with devoré velvet, knitted metallics and classic tweeds. Outdoor performance wear informs the hyper-paneled garments, which are further imbued with the feminine warmth of traditional patchwork.
The collection was amplified by the arresting, almost apocalyptic hair and makeup by Bryant Artists, and art direction by Jamie Andrew Reid at Streeters.
