Ryan Reynolds Pays Tribute to Late Deadpool Fan with Heartfelt Birthday Greeting
Ryan Reynolds is wishing his late friend a happy birthday.
“My friend Connor McGrath would have been 14 years old tomorrow,” he wrote. “He isn’t here now, but he stuck around long enough to make everyone he knew fall over laughing. Right up to the very end he was as quick with a joke as he was with a hug.”
Reynolds met McGrath, who was 13 at the time, through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and the teen became one of the first people to see Deadpool before it hit theaters.
Along with the heartfelt message, the actor included a series of photos of the two together.
“Sending his amazing parents, Kim and Gerald McGrath crisp high fives and bear-hugs of love,” he continued. “Anything you do to support your local Make A Wish Foundation is alright with me.”
At the time of McGrath’s death, the actor said the two bonded over their love for sarcasm and inappropriate jokes. And as he got to know him, the actor said he began to see similarities between the boy and his Deadpool character.
“I called Connor, ‘Bubba.’ And he called me ‘Bubba2.’ We met because he loved Deadpool. In a certain sense he WAS Deadpool. Or, at least everything Deadpool aspires to be; balancing pain, fearlessness, love and a filthy (filthy!) sense of humor in one body,” he wrote. “I wish he could’ve stuck around a lot longer.”
