Mercedes boss: 33 points is a big gap
In a season where it seems everything is working out in Nico Rosberg’s favour, Toto Wolff acknowledges that his 33-point advantage has become a “big gap.”
Rosberg raced to his ninth victory of this season at Suzuka on Sunday, extending his lead over Lewis Hamilton.
While it was a race where everything went right for Rosberg, it got off to a bad start for Hamilton as he dropped from second to eighth off the line.
Mercedes have revealed that it was yet another clutch issue that hampered the Brit’s getaway.
And with Lady Luck seemingly smiling on Rosberg and frowning at Hamilton, Wolff admits the German has a big lead.
The Mercedes motorsport boss told Sky Sports: “If you want to be a World Champion you should avoid mistakes to the minimum and that’s what he’s doing.”
“33 points is quite a big gap if everything goes right.”
There are, however, 100 points still in play with Wolff stating that anything can still happen as has already been shown this season.
“But,” he added, “we have seen that one DNF and the other guy winning is 25 points lost and then the championship is open again.”
