Fallen Muslim Soldier’s Family: ‘Donald Trump Is Not Telling the Truth’

The family of Captain Humayun Khan quickly responded to Donald Trump’s comments during Sunday night’s presidential debate about the Muslim-American soldier who was killed in Iraq, calling Trump out for initially supporting the Iraq War.

Trump said that if he had been in charge when the U.S. decided to invade Iraq, Khan would still be alive. The Republican nominee previously faced criticism in July after attacking Khan’s parents, who spoke at the Democratic convention.

“Unlike her, who voted for the war…I would not have had people in Iraq because Iraq was a disaster,” Trump said on Sunday in reference to Clinton’s vote in favor of the war. “So he would be alive today.”

The Khan family responded by calling Trump out for lying about his support of the Iraq War. Although Trump has denied supporting the war, he halfheartedly advocated for an invasion in a 2002 interview.

“We know that our son, Captain Humayun Khan, is an American hero,” the Khan family said in a statement. “We also know that Donald Trump is not telling the truth when he says he was against the Iraq War. Our son served this country with honor and distinction, and gave the ultimate sacrifice. The only thing that Donald Trump sacrifices is the truth.”
