Dead man walking: The town hall debate, liveblog #7
Blast from the (recent) past:
From a tactical standpoint, I'm not sure Clinton needs to attack Trump as much as she’s done. Let him wallow, instead spend the time giving longer issue answers.
Cooper asks about his 1995 taxes—did you use that $960 million loss to avoid paying taxes: Doesn’t answer, says he uses all the write-offs he can “of course I do” and I understand the tax code better than anyone alive and she has all these rich friends. She’s been doing this for 30 years. Why didn’t she fix it? He clearly doesn’t understand how government works.
He really doesn’t understand how government works. If you were an effective senator you would have done it. Nice line she had about that thing the president has called “veto power.” But it does give her a good opening to talk about her 30 year record on working for children.
Trump attacks Clinton for being all talk, no action … which, interestingly enough, was his defense of his own “grab them by the pussy” comments.
Trump is fighting with the moderator again. They’re moving on anyway. Syria. Aleppo. How are you going to fix it.
On another note, how anyone could possibly be an undecided voter, with this guy creepily walking around, is beyond … beyond.
Hillary again giving a cogent explanation about what is happening in Syria and Russia’s interests. Advocates for no-fly and safe zones in Syria. Have to work more closely with partners and allies on the ground and have to find leverage against Russia. Russia has decided they’re all in in Syria and all in on the election. Not sure this Russia stuff is working that well for her.
There isn’t anything fun about this at all. This is an embarrassment to the nation. This man has no business being on this stage.
Clinton corrects him that she actually wasn’t in office when Obama drew his Syria line in the sand. He doesn’t care. And he’s off. The people end up being worse than the people. ISIS has oil. Everything she’s done has been a mistake. SNIFF. She wasn’t there but she’s in control somehow because they listen to her. He really does think she’s in control of the world.
Trump tries to cover for not having realized that Clinton was no longer secretary of State with a new conspiracy theory: "I agree she wasn't there but possibly she's consulting."
Raddatz tries to rein him in and make him actually answer the question. What are you gonna do about Russia in Syria and do agree with your running mate? “He and I haven’t spoken and we disagree.” I bet Pence is saying exactly the same thing right now.
