Google Hints It Will Unveil New Smartphone On Oct. 4

Google parent Alphabet (GOOGL) late Monday sent out invitations for a San Francisco media event on Oct. 4. Alphabet's Google released a YouTube video (see below), in which a search bar slowly transforms into a handset shape. Google also revealed a simple website with a similar transformation.

A new smartphone would come on the heels of the Apple (AAPL) iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Apple's latest handset isn't transformational, but seems to have outperforming low expectations. Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics has had to issue a massive recall of its Note 7, which is at risk of bursting into flames.

Google may drop the "Nexus" name for its latest phones, according to various reports. It also may unveil home-automation products, Bloomberg reported.
