Today, the Pantone Color Institute announced its 10 top shades for Spring ’17, coming just on the heels of New York Fashion Week—and roughly only a quarter of the way through the month-long calendar. It’s a move by the (somewhat enigmatic) chromatic think tank and codifier of all things palette to remain relevant as more major labels adopt a see-now-buy-now model at some scale or another. So, will Pantone’s predictions for Primrose Yellow and Lapis Blue resonate with designers in the longer term? That’s anyone’s guess; the validity of industry tea-reading— trend forecasting, et cetera—is surely contested. But in New York and London, the street style set was already stepping out in Pantone’s top shades for next spring.
