SONOMA COUNTY (KRON) — The Sonoma County Coroner’s Office said the person whose body was washed ashore and found on Monday morning near Bodega Dunes, just south of Salmon Creek, is that of 56-year-old Steven Mitchell of Santa Rosa.
The fire district was informed at 8:09 a.m. of the body that was found face down on Monday, fire officials said.
The body was that of an adult man and it was badly decomposed, according to the press release issued by Sonoma County officials.
Officials believed that the deceased is missing person Steven Mitchell because the body had been in the water for a period of time.
Mitchell’s car was found in Bodega Bay and he left a note stating he intended to take his life, Sgt. Cecile Focha said.
Mitchell represented Sonoma County in a civil lawsuit filed against the county and sheriff’s office after Deputy Erick Gelhaus fatally shot 13-year-old Andy Lopez on Oct. 22, 2013.
The coroner said the family has been informed of the death. The coroner’s office will perform an autopsy to determine the official cause of death.
