Donald Trump Projected Winner In Virginia GOP Presidential Primary

Real estate mogul Donald Trump won Tuesday's Republican presidential primary in Virginia, gaining another impressive victory as he barrels his way toward the GOP nomination.

Trump was just ahead of Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.). Sen Ted Cruz (R-Texas) trailed. Fox, NBC and CNN projected Trump the winner.

At stake were Virginia's 49 GOP delegates, which are awarded proportionally.

Polls heading into the Tuesday primary showed Trump leading his challengers by a double-digit margin, though his lead thinned somewhat after several candidates dropped out of the race following disappointing finishes in earlier primaries.

Trump held a rally Monday at Radford University in Virginia, where he drew several thousand supporters. The event turned ugly, however, when a member of the Secret Service who was assigned to Trump's detail grabbed a photographer by his neck and slammed him to the ground.

Rubio made a late play for the commonwealth, holding five campaign events on Sunday in more populous and diverse counties in Northern Virginia where GOP voters lean toward the party’s establishment wing. Rubio borrowed from Trump's playbook on the trail, suggesting he had urinated in his pants at a recent presidential debate and even ridiculing him for having small hands in a not-so-veiled phallic joke.

Editor's note: Donald Trump is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist, birther and bully who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims -- 1.6 billion members of an entire religion -- from entering the U.S.
