10 Birth show ideas inspired by outdoor childbirth reality TV
Born in the Wild
Right about now, you might be asking yourself, "What's so interesting about childbirth?" especially if you've popped out a baby or two. Of course, Born in the Wild is the double dog dare show of reality TV — they just had to do something different to get noticed.
In the show, you'll meet a variety of couples interested in home birth. But not just any home birth… a natural birth outside the four walls of their home.
One expecting mother Audrey Bird explains, "I’ve attended many births, dealt with many complications. We were very prepared, we didn’t anticipate anything going wrong that we couldn’t handle. I trust birth, I trust the process, I trust my body, I trust my husband, I trust my training. People have this idea that birth is so dangerous — birth in most cases is perfectly safe."
As a mother who has also had a home birth, I see where she's coming from. I can't say that I would ever personally squat down by a tree to get my birth on, but you can't deny the ratings appeal.
If my predictions are correct Born in the Wild is only the beginning. Here are 10 extreme birthing show ideas that would make for even better guilt-watching TV:
1. Born at the DMV
The lines are long, the place is crowded and you know you have hours to wait. Why not kill some time by updating your driver's license in the early stages of labor?
2. Born in the Starbucks Drive-Thru
The only place more crowded than the DMV is the Starbucks drive-thru at 8 a.m. on a Monday morning. Pro tip: Don't stop for a latte on your way to the hospital.
3. Call the Midwife: My Wife Is in the Minivan
The car salesman may have left out this key detail when you signed the papers: Minivans are super roomy and great for birthin'.
4. Chick-fil-A Baby: Home Birth Edition
The thing about a home birth is that you're going to want some delicious food the moment you finish pushing. Sadly, Chick-fil-A doesn't deliver… I'm sure you see where this is going.
5. I Knew I Was Pregnant
The unexciting cousin to TLC's smash hit I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant — new moms learn that they are pregnant through the traditional pee stick route and plan a home birth.
6. My Family Is Against My Home Birth
Read any natural birth message board, and you'll find this to be true. Makes for some great TV.
7. Natural Childbirth in the Kiddie Pool in the Backyard
Truth be told, this is about as wild as it would get for me. Bring the hose.
8. Pregnant in Heels in the Wild
Classy women in heels traipse through the woods to find the perfect spot to give birth.
9. Switched at Birth in the Wild
On this Born in the Wild behind the scenes special, you'll see how a new mother copes with finding out that her son was switched at birth with a wild raccoon.
10. 16 and Pregnant in the Wild
Young home birthers in the wild — it doesn't get more extreme than that.
